I was working on my newest review (which happens to be Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away) when I got sidetracked and started looking up the director’s newest film, Ponyo. A take on Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid (yes, the story that was eventually adapted by Disney), the film has already become a hit overseas, but I wasn’t sure when it was supposed to come to the States. I’m happy to announce that it will be shown in theaters starting August 14th.
If you are unfamiliar with Miyazaki’s works, let me assure you that when you’re watching his films, you are watching art. But these are also movies I’d want my children to see (if I had children). And even though the movie will be dubbed, they have some great voice actors and the direction is overseen at Pixar (which has had a fantastic relation with Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli for the past decade). I’ll get into more about what I like about Spirited Away and his other movies during their own reviews, but I’ll say that I am very excited to see this new film on the big screen.
I loved Spirited Away, it is such an amazing title. I'm a fan of anime, so the movies of the syndicated shows are great to watch because of the extra attention to detail given. This movie was a double bonus because of what a visual eye candy it is in watching it all unfold on top of a very touching, highly imaginative story. I'm excited to hear he has a new project coming out, I'm sure it won't disappoint.
Spirited Away is a great flick. Our daughter loved it at age 5 because of the imagery, not necessarily the content. Very entertaining. Can't wait for the new release.
