And Sam Raimi is apparently going to direct. While I’m already skeptical of any video game/movie adaptation, how can you expect to make a good adaptation of a MMORPG (Mass Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)? In WoW, you can create your own original character and I’m not quite sure Raimi will be able to make a movie that represents the feel of the game when every player’s experience is totally unique. There is also the challenge of making a movie that represents both factions of the game: Alliance and Horde. For those non-WoW players out there, you can play as either a Horde member (like a troll or orc) or an Alliance member (like a human or dwarf). The cool thing about the game is that, like most wars, there is no completely evil or good side; they just have different points of view. But what is Raimi going to do to make sure that those shades of grey remain? I’m afraid it will be too easy for the filmmakers to slip into making the Alliance the heroes and the Horde the villians when it’s much more complicated than that.
Especially for you WoW fans, what are your reactions? Are you completely against this idea or could it work if done just right?
