9: From Short Film to Major Motion Picture

You might have heard about the upcoming computer animated film 9 that is coming out soon. The film has a cast of stars: Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover are among the actors. Still, for this movie, I wouldn’t suggest watching the trailer first. Watch the original film.

In 2005, Shane Acker released this short film about a strange, apocalyptic world where two living rag dolls struggle to protect themselves against vicious mechanical monsters. The story might seem a bit out there, but because there was no voice acting, it worked beautifully. Because the effects and the directing are so good, you don’t really need voices; you understand the character’s motives even with silence. It really is a beautiful and moving piece and because the new film was written and directed by Acker, I have high hopes for this movie. The only thing that could be it’s downfall is if the voice acting doesn’t work. Granted, they hired some strong actors (Christopher Plummer has a great voice), but will it work for this particular story? I’m not sure. Dialogue in itself is going to change how this story is told and we will have to see if it changes for the better.

I’d love to know what you think of the short film and if you’re excited about the new movie.
