While I don’t normally write about events in my own life, something happened yesterday and I felt compelled to share.
My instructor was lecturing about veal and how those animals are treated. He told us, “It used to be much worse. Whenever there was a sick or unwanted cow, they’d just ground the body up and give it right back to the other cows as a cheap source of feed.”
I immediately replied, “Oh, so it’s the Soylent Green of cows.”
He looked at me, confused. “Soy what?”
“Soylent Green.”
He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. He’s in his thirties. I’m only in my twenties and even I know what Soylent Green is. It made me very depressed, especially since that has to be one of the funniest things I’ve said this year and no one got it.
And because I love it, here is one of my favorite Phil Hartman skits which just happens to be about Soylent Green.
