States and Their Movies

Written by Katie Schenkel

So a little while back, Rotten Tomatoes published a list of movies that represent the United States, with one film representing a particular state. While an interesting concept, I found the list in general to be full of hits and misses. There were a few that I completely understood: Casino for Nevada, Wizard of Oz for Kansas, Fargo for North Dakota and Blues Brothers for Illinois. Even my own state of Indiana had a decent choice with Hoosiers (which happens to feature Hinkle Fieldhouse of Butler University, my alma mater, in the climactic final scene).

Then there are the ones that feel like the collaborators of this list got lazy and just threw in a movie whether it really worked or not. Of all the films about California, why did they choose Point Break? And while I realize it’s not a state with a lot of films under it’s belt, is Nebraska really represented best by Children of the Corn? And The New World was used for Virginia, but that wasn’t even that good of a movie. Couldn’t they have chosen a more memorable film?

So what do you think of the list? Did your state’s pick make sense to you? Could you think of a better one?

    Washington: Singles
Ok…so there's a lot of pop culture and local references–but I'd never heard of it before.
I think they should have picked Sleepless in Seattle. Much more current, just as many landmarks…

I kije Coal Miner's Daughter for Kentucky. It pretty much sums up the state with one of the state's biggest stars, Loretta Lynn.

On Indiana getting Hoosiers: Pennsylvania gets Rocky. West Virginia gets We Are Marshall. North Carolina gets Bull Durham. Showing that a lot of states have good roots in sports, and the stories that come from them.

Kudos for Wyoming… Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
