Yesterday, I discovered this short movie.
Some of you younger people might not know or remember this, but there was a movie in 1991 called The Rocketeer. Based on a 1982 comic series by Dave Stevens, the movie starred Billy Campbell as a stunt pilot in 1938 who finds a jetpack and fights Nazis. Commercially it bombed, but it was a fun WWII adventure movie that I really enjoyed as a kid and that was mostly praised by critics. This short is actually to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film and to honor the passing of Stevens.
While I really did like the movie, The Rocketeer‘s special effects weren’t exactly extraordinary. Looking back, they’ve aged pretty badly and yes, the movie has a pretty high level of camp. But this short has made me convinced that they could do an amazing computer animated film. Maybe a little family friendly, but with a huge amount of gorgeous action and thrills. Congrats to Digital Banana Studios for making such a fun, enjoyable short.
Amazing! I actually really like the movie, The Rocketeer. I find it very underrated.
Would love for them to do something with it again – either a reboot, or something like this would even be great.
