So, I write and star in the webseries Just Plain Series. Part of the reason I choose franchises to review was because I knew I had plenty of content – every year we see more and more sequels, after all. Little did I know how right I was. That’s right … we’re getting more Vacation movies.

You’d think Hollywood would have learned with Las Vegas Vacation, the last of the in-theaters Vacation movies. Heck, you’d think they would have learned with the made-for-tv trainwreck Christmas Vacation 2, which I’m pretty sure didn’t have actual jokes in it, funny or not.

People are calling this a reboot, but I think it might just be a continuation. The idea that Rusty (who will be played by someone I’m sure wasn’t Rusty in any of the other films) decides he wants to take his own family on vacations like he got to enjoy as a kid, and one of those places is Wally World. So, apparently nostalgia clouds your mind enough that the vacation where your father held a security guard at gunpoint sounds like a perfect plan for your own family.

There’s practically no reason to ask “Why?” The why is to make money. But when you ask “Why is this necessary?” the answer is there it’s not at all. There’s always a chance the three new movies (yes, three) will be good, but I just don’t see it. This looks like a cash grab playing off people’s sense of nostalgia, and that rarely means good movies as well.

The directors are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote last summer’s Horrible Boss but who haven’t directed films yet. It’s important to note that both Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are reprising their roles as now Grandpa and Grandma Griswold, but I don’t think that’s going to guarantee these films’ quality.

Again, this could possibly be good, but it’s going to try really hard. Or try. At all.
