DC Comic fans have less than a month until Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise comes to an end. I know this series isn’t for everyone, but I absolutely love his movies and I have no doubt he’ll do justice to this last movie. Besides being a Batfan for over two decades, I’m already a little Batman crazy lately thanks to 1). getting into the excellent show Young Justice and 2). dedicating CartoonClack to the Dark Knight with Batman Month, but I’ve also been seeing a good amount of TV spots for the movie to rev me up even more. Most of the commercials are just rehashing of clips from the theatrical trailers, but the newer one had me noticing some hints.
First, the quip from Fox is great (so glad they got Morgan Freeman to come back). The fact that he can be a smart ass to Bruce and Bruce will tease him back says a lot about the tone of the movie. It’s going to be intense for sure, but Nolan will still bring some character-based humor, which is important. The fact that Bruce can still joke – even if he looks very worn down – is a sign that he hasn’t completely given up. I also love that Fox’s quip is a callback to the first movie.
The other detail I noticed was Bruce’s cane. Maybe they’ve shown that already, but this is the first time I’ve actually notice him limp or lean on his cane. He mentions getting back in the game, but just how long has he been out? How long has Gotham been without their Dark Knight? This is important because the beginning of the trailer features John Blake complimenting Commissioner Gordon for cleaning up Gotham. If Bruce had to give up being Batman years ago, then Gordon cleaned up the streets without him which means both Gotham and Bruce don’t think the city needs Batman anymore. So when Bane’s forces hit, the city will be more vulnerable than ever. A lot of people are going to die, plenty more than in The Dark Knight. So yeah, it’s going to be intense.
