Sucker Punch Trailer

OK, this trailer came out months ago, but since it’s coming out in March, I thought I’d mention it. So, here’s Sucker Punch.

What I’ve gathered from both the trailer and other sources is that the plot centers around a teenager whose family is murdered. She’s sent to live in a home for troubled young women, but the owners actually take advantage of the girls by making them dance for slobbering men. Baby Doll (yes, that’s the protagonist’s name) creates/discovers an alternate reality which she is told she can use to plan her escape.

For the most part, the movie looks cool. I do like seeing girls kick ass on their own. My one worry is that while the girls are powerful and kick ass in the fantasy, in the real world they’re strippers. What I’m saying is… how many guys are going to go to this movie mostly to see lots of cleavage, with the action being a happy extra? It’s not that the girls can’t kick ass and be beautiful, too. But from the trailer, these girls are tough emotionally and physically, but really loathe being ogled by pervy men… and I just worry that too many horny male film-goers will miss the point of the whole movie.

That being said, the cast looks really strong. We’ve got Jena Malone and Emily Browning, both fantastic actors from a very young age, as two of the main girls. Carla Gugino plays the girls’ mentor (I think. It was kind of vague in the trailer). Most importantly, Jon Hamm is playing one of the bad guys. I would watch that guy read the dictionary… as long as he’s wearing a suit.

And think what you want about Zach Snyder, but I like how he does action films and this one looks cool visual. Plus, I’m really impressed that he isn’t letting go into 3D for the sake of 3D (unlike practically any other action director).
