There’s been a wee bit of backlash online at The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment of the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. Between the very brief teaser trailer that mostly showed footage from the previous films and the rather un-Catwomany photo of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (see above), many of the fans have been pretty mad about how it’s looking. But not me.
Now granted, the trailer did disappoint me, but you have to understand it’s a teaser trailer. We might have gotten that sweet Joker voiceover in The Dark Knight‘s first teaser, but it was still quite short with mostly establishing shots of Gotham. While I would have enjoyed more footage from the new movie, the teaser is just supposed to get us excited for the story while they are still filming.
As far as the Anne Hathaway photo goes, I don’t think this is a photo of Catwoman. While she’s been officially cast as Selina Kyle (traditionally Catwoman’s alter ego), they haven’t actually said Hathaway’s Selina would be taking on the catsuit, so to speak. As much as I’m hoping to see Batman and Catwoman interacting, I don’t think this is the Catwoman outfit. If I had to guess right now, I’d say this is Selina’s catburgler outfit before she takes on the Catwoman persona. Because before anything else, nothing about this says, “cat.” Nolan might be all about the realism, but even he made Joker decked out in snazzy greens, purples and whites. Whatever the Catwoman costume will look like, it will look something like a cat. I’m sure of it.
I get that people want to start analyzing the movie details we already know about, but in so many ways it’s just too soon to start judging it so harshly. Christopher Nolan has done so much to make the last two Batman films strong representations of what we love about the Caped Crusader, so let’s take all this with a grain of salt. Let’s see some more footage, get some more trailers before we swear off seeing it, OK?
Speaking of footage, we did get some raw footage of a big public fight between Batman and villain Bane. It’s kind of fun to see Batman and the cops brutally fight Bane and his militarized henchmen, only to have Nolan say cut and have them all be buddies off-camera. Also interesting note is that it appears to be lightly snowing during the fight. Enjoy.
For once I have to say "give this one a chance" to a botched teaser trailer. There have been many other teaser trailers that I've recognized as a bad teaser and an equally bad movie–but I agree this one will pull through.
