Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters could be an early 2013 treat

Earlier this year I wrote about how the onslaught of fairytale movies and TV shows were starting to becoming a little irritating. Not all of them are bad, but you can tell that most of them are being made because they’re trendy and because it’s easy to tailor the story for the Twilight demographic. Whenever I hear about “a whole new twist on Cinderella” or “the untold story of the three little pigs,” my initial reaction is eye roll. It doesn’t help that Snow White and the Huntsman tried to do a strong warrior version of Snow White without actually writing or casting a strong female who could pass as a warrior. But after checking out the trailer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters … OK, I’m excited for this one. Check it out:

First and foremost, it’s awesome to see a movie like this where the focus is on a brother and sister relationship. There seems to be at least one love interest (Hansel goes for a dip with some blonde from what I could tell), but the story revolves around these two siblings going out and kicking ass. Like the mother-daughter focus in Brave, you don’t see that very often. The fact that they both seem to be equal partners is also very cool … although why did they have to make Gretel be the one kidnapped? So the concept is pretty awesome, but it’ll all come down to the execution (… see what I did there?). Obviously they’re setting the story up so that the big bads aren’t their normal witches but something they’ve never dealt with before, so whatever that is better be good. However, Jeremy Renner has already won me over thanks to Avengers so any time he’s doing actiony things, I’ll be happy. Honestly, I don’t even care that they both have American accents as long as it’s fun.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters comes out in late January 2013.
