I’m not the biggest fan of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the newest Batman cartoon. It’s in many ways a throwback to the campier, Adam West-ian Batman of the 60s. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen a few episodes of the new cartoon and while it has it’s moments, the writing was better back in the 90s (and I miss the voice work of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker).
When I heard a while ago that they did a musical episode, I was more than hesitant. I mean, the show is already pretty corny, will more corny work? But I discovered today that Neil Patrick Harris guest starred. And that made me very happy. NPH has a fantastic voice and has a special place in many a geek’s heart from the sublime Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. This makes the musical episode that much better. Did I mention his character is a singing super villain who falls in love with Black Canary, who is crazy about Batman? Folks, this is the closest we’re going to get to the Dr. Horrible sequel… at least this year (Whedon is planning a sequel, but it’s still pre-production).
I did watch the cartoon and while the songs are just OK, Neil’s voice totally knocks it up a notch. I also loved the short Music Man reference. Watch and tell me what you think.
