I don’t like to get into political issues in general, and definitely not on my site. However, the House and Senate are trying to pass bills (SOPA/Protect IP/ E-Parasite) that will destroy the internet as we know it. I realize that sounds over dramatic, but the bills will stop the free exchange of any copyrighted information, even if it isn’t for monetary gain. That means youtube, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and any social networking site will be essentially shut down or at the very least severely handicapped. Then we get to reviewers like myself, whose sites could be shut down and could even face jail time for sharing media. To be frank, this is terrifying.
In many ways, the internet has made my life so much better. I met my boyfriend on the social networking side of Red vs Blue’s website, I met many of my best friends through sharing our common interests online. Most importantly, the internet gave me a place to write and become a better writer. Just Plain Something led to me writing for CliqueClack, which is one of the funnest jobs I’ve ever had. Those experiences were a big factor in me getting my “real” job… which just happens to be a website copywriter, crafting websites for other people. I don’t want to see this happen to one of the last forums for open creative expression.
I’m awful with legal jargon, so please go to Mozilla’s site for more information on this completely unconstitutional bill and use the site to email your statesmen and women to tell them how you feel.
